This could be our first 'love' game - will Congar get a single vote? Again, I'm not familiar enough with either party in the second game to make a call.
HUvB (I'm sorely tempted, Byron, to give Congar the vote, just for kicks and on the strength of I Believe in the Holy Spirit, but voting against Balthasar would be like, I don't know, leaving Barth out of a poll on greatest C20 theologians)*
Having Boff and Tracy pitted against each other in Round 1 is not fair! I would have loved to vote for both. Oh well...I agree with mjdeem's comments about Tracy.
It seems Congars massive pneumatology is no match for von Balthasar's comments on Speyr's visions(?). It is interesting that von Balthasar is so popular in the English speaking world. It is my impression that his leaving the jesuits significantly diminshed is position in Europe...
von Balthasar although you are on to something patrik about his popularity in the English speaking world vs. German. leaving the jesuits was a much bigger deal (especially for a writer who so values obedience to authority) than is recognized. this was the reason he wasn't at vatican ii. and ben, rahner can compete with him on any given pitch.

Balthasar (Congar deserved a better chance with another group!)
ReplyDeleteTracy--Tracy is tops in his field when it comes to hermeneutics and method in Catholic theology; Boff lives in the shadow of Gutierrez and Sobrino!

von Balthasar -- his recovering of aesthetics in theology is simply amazing.
ReplyDeleteon the other game, I call a draw; I'm not fond of neither Boff nor Tracy.
