This is much more difficult for me. I know Pannenberg best of the lot, but I don't really like him. Everything I've heard about Lubac sounds positive.

Brunner and Ebeling really ist mir egal, I take Brunner for his idea of the man as rebel, which sounds cool, though I have no idea what he means by it...

There's no contest here. Pannenberg is quite good, though too focused on the facts of history. Ebeling is without a doubt the most important Lutheran theologian of the last 150 years. Bonhoeffer is great, too, but not as significant. Jüngel and Bayer are who they are because Ebeling came before them.

toinen meni arvonnaksi.

The first match is tough, I hope they both go through. But I vote for de Lubac because there would be no Hans Urs Van Balthasar, John Paul II, or Joseph Ratzinger without him. Plus Radical Orthodoxy is due in large part to his work.

Ebeling.

Dang, that first pair is a kicker. Hmmmm... I guess I'll go with de Lubac, but only because I think he has had a more significant impact than Pannenberg.

The second one is also tough but I'll go with Ebeling.

I simply know these two better and have to agree with what is said above: Ebeling is definately one of the most important Lutheran theologians of the 20th century :)

Pannenberg (in my view he's the most important Protestant theologian since Barth, even though I often disagree with him)

Ebeling (my admiration for Ebeling knows no bounds -- he's one of my favourite modern theologians, someone who showed that it was still possible to do powerful and gripping dogmatics in the tradition of Schleiermacher; there's really no one else quite like Ebeling, and I never get tired of reading and re-reading him)

Ouch. Pannenberg is way underrated (I agree w/ Ben's assessment) and is everything Moltmann could have been if the latter were actually a scholar. This is a hard choice. But b/c of my own argument, I'll vote:

De Lubac

Brunner

Out of interest -

In The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Modern Christian Thought (1993), edited by Alister McGrath, Brunner gets 1/3 page, Pannenberg gets 2 1/2 pages - while Ebeling and de Lubac do not even merit entries!

In The Modern Theologians, Volumes I and II (1989), edited by David Ford, Pannenberg gets a whole chapter, de Lubac a total of four index references, and Brunner and Ebeling a total of two index references each.

So, if only to register a protest against such (Anglican) editorial lopsidedness, I'll go for:

de Lubac and Ebeling.
